Why are lab-created diamonds called eco-friendly
diamonds?
Lab-created
diamonds are increasingly becoming the economical choice for price-conscious
couples due to the widespread effect of the coronavirus pandemic. Also known as
lab grown diamonds, man made diamonds and cultured diamonds, lab-created
diamonds are also recognized as eco-friendly diamonds. Why so? Let’s take a
quick look at how natural diamonds are formed, and the subsequent creation of
lab-created diamonds.
The biggest
difference between a lab grown diamond and a natural diamond lies in how the
diamonds are formed. Natural diamond, as its name suggests, is formed under
extreme environments over an extended period of time, usually over billions of
years. After surviving the long strenuous period, these strong diamonds
ultimately become the hardest known material on Earth, with the ability to
withstand hard scratches.
However, this is
where it brings about the environmental and humanitarian concerns over diamond
mining. The Kimberley Process which started investigating the origins of such
conflict diamonds in 2000, disclosed that the mining of diamonds were against
human rights. In addition, such diamond mining was then used to financially
sustain rebel movements against the main governments. Thus, this led to the
creation of The Kimberley Process, which aimed to eliminate trade in said
conflict diamonds.

In contrast,
lab-created diamonds and lab grown diamonds are diamonds that are cultivated
and developed under similar conditions as natural diamonds, with the only
difference being, as its name suggests, grown in controlled labs. This would
also be considered economically-friendly diamonds, as this is grown without
constant human supervision and is created in a substantially faster time.
Due to this, the difference in cost between natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds is increasingly obvious. However, unless you’re a diamond expert or eagle-eyed for the most perfect hearts and arrows, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference! The end result of both lab-created diamonds and natural diamonds regularly results in similar sparkle.
So,
economical-wise, couples who are financially strained may find lab grown
diamonds more attractive. Likewise for couples who are environmentally
conscious.
